You are in control of what you share. Many sections of the app are available with little data sharing. Set your privacy level so that you can access the features you want while sharing only the data you choose.
Some features are available only if you are signed in with a NetID and a privacy level set to 4 or 5. Specific academic-focused sections are available only to enrolled students, and anyone with a University Housing contract has extra options to help identify dining choices and laundry services.
Consent
You can opt in and opt out of data collection through the app’s privacy settings. You can change the privacy level at any time and even request the deletion of your personal information from our servers.
Analytics
We gather analytics about the Illinois app while ensuring that all individuals’ privacy is maintained through the use of two distinct types of universally unique identifiers (UUIDs). When you select privacy levels 1–3, we collect restricted personally identifiable information that you have provided. Only self-identification—choosing student, employee, parent, athletics fan, alumni, or visitor under the Who Are You profile setting—is used for demographics. All other details about app use are anonymized. This UUID also allows the app to remember your preferences.
When you select privacy levels 4–5, a different type of UUID connected to more extensive personally identifiable information is activated. This UUID allows us to gather information from i-card data such as year in school, employee status, and department affiliation.
Data Storage and Security
All collected information is securely stored on cloud-based Amazon Web Services servers. We adhere to industry standards to ensure the utmost security of these data.
The Illinois app does not sell or lease personal information to third parties. Information is shared according to the services and functions you select in the app.
Content Retention
The Illinois app gives a great deal of freedom to users to create groups, events, posts, and polls that create community, share information, and support student success. To accomplish these tasks, this content must be relevant and timely. The following procedures apply to dormant and experimental content. They do not apply to university-managed groups.
- If a public or private group is created and has no members other than the creator after six months and has had no activity, the group will be deleted.
- If a group has had no activity (events, posts, replies, polls) for one year, the group will be deleted.
- Polls (except for polls inside groups) that have had no voting activity for one year will be closed and will expire.
